The canyon is formed by the Dnister river and occupies the territory of 4 regions - Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Chernivtsi, and Khmelnytskyi. It was formed as a result of the specific geological structure of the locality, tectonic movements, and processes of water and wind erosion. There are many reserves within the canyon, and its total length is about 250 km. The Dnister Canyon is one of the largest canyons in Europe and is recognized as one of the seven wonders of Ukraine.
